Sara Fanelli Exquisite Corpse

Sara Fanelli Exquisite Corpse

Exquisite Corpse is a game created by surrealists that attempted to create a creature in a collaborative manner. The game involves drawing a part of a character and then folding the paper down and passing it on to the next participant. In doing so, the next player couldn’t see the work of the artists before them. This meant that the group would produce an odd looking creature. This is a perfect methodology to use in Sara Fanelli’s style, as her characters are very odd looking to begin with.

This is a piece of work called “Nude” by four artists in 1927. It is an example of said technique:

Most of us had heard of this technique before, but had only played it in school to pass the time, not to produce an actual piece of work. But we read up on it a bit more, and found out about its origins in the surrealist culture, and were excited to replicate it ourselves.

This was a collaboration between Lizzie, Alex, Myself and Alyssa, in that order descending. I really enjoyed doing this and I feel that our styles blended well together to create an interesting character.

I then took this a step further and tried to redraw the creature in my own style entirely, just to see what it would look like.

I really enjoyed this task, and I would like to try it again.
