Soufflage is another surrealist technique, but this one wasn’t developed by Max Ernst. It was in fact Jimmy Ernst, his son. This technique involves blowing paint onto a canvas to create a work of art. This can either be the finished product or can be the base for further refinement. It comes from the French word for blowing. Which is mainly how it is done.
This is an example of Jimmy Ernst’s work. Which shows how he used a base of blown colour to then create pattern and texture over the top.
I really like the textures and patterns of this piece. And it inspired me to try my own:
I used oil paints and water to create a consistency that I was happy with, and then used a straw to blow across the surface to create patterns and textures.
