Frottage is the process of taking a material and placing it over a textured surface, and then using some form of charcoal or similar implement to rub over said surface to produce a textured pattern. This was a technique developed by Max Ernst. He used the boards of a wooden floor to create art using frottage. Frottage can be used to create backgrounds for work or can be left as it is for its own piece.
This is a piece by Ernst called "The entire city". It is an example that has been worked into slightly, but not enough so that it is entirely obvious what it represents.
This is work I did, using found materials. I left it like this because I liked the composition of the piece and felt I would ruin this if I worked into it any more.
